Cold turkey

I believe it was Charles Dickens that said "quitting smoking is easy, I've done it many times. I suppose many of us have gone through the same cycle. I had quit smoking for 18 years(cold turkey) and felt I could conquer the world.Three years ago I retired from the Post Office and got together with an old girl friend that smoked and drank. Two deadly combinations. Being retired and not having planned wisely, I having too much time on my hands started spending more and more time with this friend. I asked her for a smoke and thats when my world changed. In a matter of a week I was smoking two packs a day. And starting to dislike myself more and more. why? because I had fallen into the trap. I believe that there's no such thing as an X smoker just as there is no such thing as an x alcoholic. We must always be on alert. I am no longer with this person so I believe this has helped. It took one smoke and three years to finally quit. Yes, Cold Turkey. It's been nine days. How do I keep strong? I keep remembering the years I didn't smoke and how bad the people that smoked smelled when they passed me by.No matter how pretty I thought a women was the smell would make me turn away. I remember when I did smoke how children would make faces and many even hold their noses. All these things I applied to myself. Because if you remember, when you smoke you don't smell anything. Is doing it cold turkey hard? yes it's hard. This is only one way of dealing with this habit. There are many others, patches, gum, prescription medications. But I believe the best thing to have is DETERMINATION. Hiya Freddie, 9 days already is fantastic. Stop beating yourself up about what has happened, you cant change it but you can change the way you think about it. Let it go. You are doing something about it so be proud. The way smokers smell this is a huge motivator for me really puts me off. One of my housemates still smokes but outside, its disgusting she will come in after having one and i have to move away or block my nose. Im so ashamed that i went all the years without realizing how bad i smelled. Once i got passed the first week i was home and hosed. I knew that i would never touch another cigarette again - ever. N.O.P.E not one puff ever. I did what ever it took. I read for hours and hours and hours and posted in here played games, cleaned. I was so determined i really wanted the quit more than i wanted to smoke. If you need us Freddie please reach out and ask for help. We have all been where you are and we all know what you are going through. Keep Smilin' :) PrincessC :) x

Wow, 18 years, freddie. Most of us can't wait till we have those large numbers under our belt. We also get to feeling pretty confident that after so long we'll never go back...but you're reminding us just how easy it is to lapse. We can't let that guard down. Welcome back to no smoking! You gained a lot of health over those 18 years... time to gain some more. :) I'm sure you have a lot of insight into quitting that would help so many. I hope we'll be seeing you around the forum.
