addicted to NRT

thanks ladyb and phil, Well, phil; obviously, your counselor needs to educate herself about nicotine addiction. Yes, more nrt would probably make you feel better for right now. But, ask her, Isn't it just delaying what you are going through right now to a later date? We can't get around any of the withdrawals from this drug. We have to go through it so we can come out on the other side a FREE person. Hope you are feeling better today, Phil. that's good, Phil. Not One Patch Ever! Well, now that you are done with them. I don't know if i could have quit smoking cold turkey. I needed the NRT. Like I said before, it is a two edged sword. The NRT's were part of our individual quit journey towards freedom from this addiction. We all find our own way..hope you are getting some relief from the cravings and feeling better. You are right no more cig, We all have to find our own way. What kind of NRT are you using? And HOW MUCH? I guess that is the important question that you have to ask yourself. With me, the longer that I used it, the more dependent I became on it to feel "normal". AND I never quite felt normal. I always had that low grade craving for nicotine. I always had to have the lozenges; could not go anywhere without them. If I had over 5 a day, I felt drugged out and tired. It became bothersome after a while. But, you have to remember, I was using NRT for over a Year. You are going on 6 months now. That is longer than any product is recommended. But, believe me, I understand. And let's not kid ourselves. Nicotine is nicotine. It is a poison. It is highly addictive. NRT is better than smoking, but it still has negative affects on our bodies, because nicotine is poisonous. thanks Katy, I have been thinking about this alot. I had one 2mg lozenge today. I bummed it from another quitter at work. It was very anticlimaxtic. I really did kind of panic because I had no lozenges. But, that is it for me. I don't want any chantix..no more magic pills, (they don't exist anyway). I will think through some rewards, plan out these next few days. I work on Sunday, but am off on Monday and Tuesday. I am chewing the heck out of these straws though. Will I ever be able to quit that?? thanks Phil, It is good to know that there are others who went through this. It seems to be a subject that has not been discussed much here on scc. But, you and Ladybugg both made me feel better about what I was going through. Believe me, I knew that i was addicted to the NRT and I had to stop using it And thanks Katy. My panic was mental. This journey towards freedom has been a LONG time coming for me. I have been on this site for over a year; been to the beach (100 day) and back twice; restarted my meter 3 times (I smoked a few cigs more than three times, just did not restart my meter EVERY time). This has been an incredible struggle for me. But, I did not give up. I am in the final stages of this quit and I have no intention of falling back into the serial quitter trap...the extended longings, the thoughts of smoking day and night. Along with the thoughts come the mental exhaustion; the fear that you will feel this way for the rest of your life; the self condemnation because others seem to have made it to freedom and you can not get there. You start to question yourself, "Am I weaker or just not as committed?" But, with the help of this site, being able to write my thoughts and receive answers from real people; I now believe that I can make it to freedom. I really can get smoking and nicotine addiction out of my life forever AND feel normal again. At one point during this quit I was off of NRT (all nicotine) for over a month. I was just beginning to feel the freedom..not totally, but enough that some of the joy had returned to my life, SOME normalness. I would have periods where I did not think about smoking for a few hours at a time. NOW,I have reached bottom, I have exhausted myself. I can not and will not go back to that slavery. I am crying right now. Forgive me if I seem overly dramatic. I am so thankful that I am smoke free. thanks danielle, I am off for the next 2 days. I will have to see how I feel, If I want to just relax; or if I want to stay incedibily busy to keep my mind occupied. I have been down all day, and weepy. I'm sure just a little withdrawl symptoms. I'll tell you though, I'm feeling it. But, you know what? I don't think that I could have quit smoking without the help of the NRT's. So, in the long run, I think they helped me. It is a double edged sword; but if it helped me quit smoking, that is wonderful. well guys, I had only one lozenge yesterday and NONE today. So, my first day with no nicotine at all. Like I said, I have been down and weepy all day. And thanks bfs. I have been around for a looong time. I am going to get it done, finally. This withdrawal is NOTHING compared to hell week. I am handling it fine. So, any of you that have been over using the NRT; don't be afraid. This last month I went down to the losest dosage of the lozenge, (2mg) and kept careful track of how many i was having each day (3-4). Before that, I would just have one whenever I wanted..that can turn into a very bad course of action. And what Katy said is soooo true. If you are giving yourself even that small amount of nicotine, you will continue to long for it. And that gets exhausting. I am very tired, so hopefully I will get a good nights sleep and have some nice "me" time tomorrow. Thanks all. I understand that Rusty. I was using it for an aid to quit smoking. And I am proud of myself that I have not smoked in so long. I did not think it was possible until I found this site and turned my mind around. I was just looking for some practical advice from others that have faced this problem. thanks gonna, I live in phoenix. I'm sure chantix is available here. I should talk to my dr about using it for a while. I am down to my last nicotine lozenge today. I am not buying any more before I go to work. I will see how it goes, but I AM NOT going to smoke. No more vicious cycle in my life! I can get online at work, so maybe I;ll check in later. I have been using one form or another of NRT for over a year now. My current choice is the lozenges. I am down to 4 2mg lozenges a day. Today, I only had two..could NOT fall asleep, got up to have another lozenge and ended up here at SCC. I was sleepless like this in the beginning of my quit. I am growing in my confidence that I will not smoke again. but in the past, when i would go off of the NRT, that is when i would kid myself into thinking that I could have just one death stick. I did manage to go off of the lozenges for a month and a half; then my daughter moved to NY; I got stressed/worried and used that for an excuse to smoke again for a week. I hate the serial quitter limbo, but I am getting so sick of depending on NRT. Any suggestions?
