I agree with what you are saying completely. My parents both smoke and my hubby and I both quit about 3 weeks ago. Now, everyone we know is telling us, it's our juob to help mom and dad quit. Not a chance. They know we are quitting and if that encourages them then so be it, but I am not going to push them to do it. They have been smoking much longer than us, although I strongly believe that you get to a point where, you know, 10 year smoker or 30 year smoker, quitting is quitting. But that's just me, anyway, I just don't think that it's up to us as new non-smokers (or even old non-smokers) to force those we love to quit. This is a decision each smoker will have to make for themselves. Ok, this is not a withdrawl or a craving question. I just need to vent a little and see if anyone has ever dealt with this before. Last night one of my friends and I were talking on the phone. First she said she can't believe I quit (I've been smoking a pack a day for the past 6 years and I just quit cold turkey out of the blue a month ago) and then she proceeded to tell me how I should talk to another friend of ours who still smokes and tell him to quit! Ok, I don't know how you guys feel about this, but as an addict I hated people telling me to quit. Especially people who used to smoke. It just didn't work. I've always thought that quitting is a personal choice and the pushier people are, the more likely you are to go outside and light another one. Anyway, this friend of mine just kept going on and on how we all need to talk to him and intervene like the other guy is 5 and doing crack or something. It pissed me off so bad I just told her I don't want to have anything to do with that and it he ever comes to me for help I'll be there naturally, but other than that there's no way I am going to pass any judgement or try to convince him to do something he's clearly not ready for, just because I did it. Grrrrrrr, why is it that people who don't smoke cannot understand that smokers will smoke regardless of what you say until (and if ever)they get ready to quit? It makes me feel like I'm supposed to be the fairy godmother, wave my magic wand and have every smoker around me quit... Well, what do you guys think? Ever been there? Thanks! Cigarettes Not Smoked

If someone said something to me about smoking, it just made me smoke more, like "I'll show them!" Funny thing about smoking that I was thinking. It seems that smoking is one thing in our life we think we can control, when other life events may make us feel out of control. We could always count on the ole' cig... we were in control and we would smoke if we wanted, no matter what anyone said to us. Funnier thing is that we didn't control smoking at all... it completely controlled us. Fooled, weren't we? Did you say you have a magic wand? b/c I want in on that . . . I think your post is appropriate. I also think you are dead on with your sizing up of the situation. You did all the right things. I really don't know why you posted for our support. Be confident! I'm wondering if there isn't the opportunity here to say something about the desire to quit and ownership of a quit and when support of others is supportive. I most definatlely want to congratulate you on the 30 day quit from "out of the blue". You are amazing and of strong character- that carries over to all areas of you life. I do believe that if my friends or family planned an intervention, I would have gone outside, chainsmoked through the entire thing and then bought another pack. I always admired (although I was oh so jealous of) people that quit. (I always felt kind of left behind). You are so right about your friend... he will quit when the time is right for him. Good for you for quitting and good for you for keeping it in perspective. Absolutely agree with everyone - if anyone had told me to quit I am convinced I'd be still smoking now. All you can do is be honest about your experience but only if he asks or shows an interest (I bet he will be interested - most smokers are fascinated about such experiences) As everyone says you can't nag anyone into giving up - but you can inspire by your success !!!! Good luck :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/1/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 1089 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 21,796 Amount Saved: 5445 Life Gained: Days: 154 Hrs: 10 Mins: 21 Seconds: 41

bibe, We have all been there many times! You are right :) They will quit in there own time. You can be there for them for support and knowledge. You have the upper hand so communicate with your other friend, when the time is right, you will be there :) Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
