Have an NRT question

Hi Josie, I battled the crave last night and that one was really bad. I actually started having the shakes and some hot flashes and didn't prepare for those. I settled myself down with slow, deep breaths and lots more water. I decided to go that way and not use nicorette gum after the burning sensation. I kept chewing sugar free bubble gum, sucking sugar free hard candy, toothpicks, straws, and things like that. I did all of these things while I got myself busy. Today is the end of day two now. I haven't been hit with a horrible crave like the one last night. I've had craves but I immediately start doing something different to take my mind off of it. Plus, I'm drinking so much water. Tomorrow is day Three. Wish me luck guys!! brentw1, Okay....72 hours, 72 hours, 72 hours....I'm holding you to that!!! ha ha ha ha If I still feel like smacking my husband around some after today, I'm gonna have to write you a strongly worded letter. ha ha ha ha ha Just a little quitter's humor there. This is day 3 so Phil, if you have some of those laughing tablets, sail some of those puppies over here. ha ha ha ha Tutti My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/18/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 3 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 179 Amount Saved: $8.37 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 8 Mins: 15 Seconds: 44

Has the gum caused a burning sensation inside of anyone's mouth? If so, is that normal? My son-in-law has the gum and dropped some off to me. I wanted to try half of a peice and my mouth started burning inside. I spat it out. I can't do that. Nope. I really can't use NRT's anyway but I'm having one whale of a craving tonight so I wanted a little help. I think I'll stick to sugar free cherry lifesavers, sugar free bubble gum, and smacking my husband around some. HA HA HA HA Just a little quitter's humor there. This is one really bad crave. I have to get up and do something. Tutti PS Pray me through this crave. K? try, what do the instructions say? I'm not using nrt, so I can't answer your question. The reason i am replying to the post though, I am going to follow the directions of the rx I am using. If at the end of the 12 week program...I don't feel like a non-smoker...I am going to be asking questions of "WHY?" Just so you know, and I'm sure your reading many posts just like the rest of us. I do feel like a Non-Smoker at this point and very good I might add. What I am using is expensive too, but...it's worth it to me and actually is cheaper than buying my ciaretts. Now you know you could go cold-turkey? You could just stop using the gum, maybe replace it with regular gum...? Of course you won't be getting the nicotine...and you will start withdrawal that will last 3 or so days. Are you mentally prepared to deal with the withdrawal,Craves, and Triggers? Are you ready to say "I Don't Smoke"? Personally, from what I read from you...I think you can. I believe you are strong enough to do it. I also believe there are many here who would agree! auntdeb ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 47 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,379 Amount Saved: $223.25 Life Gained: Days: 6 Hrs: 13 Mins: 12 Seconds: 43

..."Do what you think will give you the best chance at staying quit - forever." You're right there, Penguin! :) Remember this is your quit, and you should know yourself better than anyone else! :) Cheers, A fifth time quitter, nmc My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 179 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,799 Amount Saved: $895 Life Gained: Days: 34 Hrs: 4 Mins: 19 Seconds: 2

Hey you lot! Do what you have to do just dont smoke. I would use as little NRT as you can beacuse this way you are not pumping too much nico into your body. HOWEVER if you crave that badly slap a patch on or use the gum! I did the full course and then had to get myself off the NRT which was tricky... Try a dose of willpower medicine and a laughing tablet they work! Tryagain, Generally, we recommend you follow the full program. If you'd like to stop using the gum sooner, ask yourself if you're ready to deal with the cravings that will come with it. If you are, talk to your pharmacist. You'll both be able to come up with a gradual step-down together. Danielle ______________________ The SSC Support Team

The gum does cause a mild sensation like it's peppery in the mouth. I don't sense that much anymore but if you aren't prepared for it, it can be quite a shock. While NRT has never taken away a crave, it has made them a little easier to deal with. Sometimes the difference between caving in and being able to white knuckle it out. I've been using the gum which has a specific program to quit. Since I'm now feeling a little better, my energy is returning for instance, I don't take the gum when I'm always supposed to. I'm only at day 21, and the program is 12 weeks. Do I really have to take the gum all 12 weeks? Has anyone ever quit early? The gum is really expensive, which I've been able to justify by not buying cigarettes, but I'd like to be done with the expense all together unless I have to keep taking it. I was a cold turkey mad englishman this time round as I had tried NRT previuously. The bottom line is that the problem is a nicotine addiction and not a smoking problem. Sooner or later you have to break that physical addiction. Whether you personally can deal with it better with a gradual reduction, or whether you prepare yourself for a clean break depends I think on each individual. However you go about it, success or failure (in my experience) depends on your mental approach and the plan you have to cope with that 72 hour period of physical addiction withdrawal. HOpe this helps and good luck.
