What is Crave?

What is a Crave? Is it just if you want to smoke or is it also when you think about it? Will I just don't know what the bumped is. Or how to read it. Is there some link to how message boards work. It can be very confusing. :confuse: My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/22/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 37 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,510 Amount Saved: $333 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 8 Mins: 55 Seconds: 17

OK I get it. I read the bump all the way to the end. I am not going to say what my conclusion is. Time will tell. I have smoked for 52 years. Craves, smoking thoughts, memories, triggers. It's all addiction. Craving, craving, craving ... My question is: - Craving for what?! :) In my own experience, in the last 65 days of quitting, I did not crave for cigarettes, but I craved for ... COMFORT! :) Previously, as a smoker, whenever I craved for comfort, I reached for a cigarette. Now, I must replace it by different means: deep breath, icy drink, coffee, meditation, brisk walk in the open space, write to this SSC forum, etc ... and as a last resort: one or two puffs from the NRT inhaler (and/or a small piece of NRT lozenge, cut into 4 small pieces) to calm it down! :) Aa someone has said, time is a great healer. Gradually, day by day, the craving becomes less intense, and I feel more confident to cope with it, in a gentle and patient manner. I often tell myself: "It takes time to change a 35-years habit of smoking. Be patient! One day at a time!" :) Cheers, nmc (a fifth time quitter) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 65 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 658 Amount Saved: $325 Life Gained: Days: 12 Hrs: 5 Mins: 38 Seconds: 4

I think it is both. I am sure one of the smart people around here can give you a scientific answer. In fact seems like there was a post a while back about it. Grace

Trailbum, A "bump" is when somebody posts to an old post to "bump" it to the top. The thread I'm talking about is called Craves and Triggers and if you click on this link here, it will take you to it. Hope this helps. Crave the Quit! A post that Penitent wrote regarding this was bumped for you. I really hope you will take the time to read through that thread, as there are MANY different opinions on the difference between craves, smoking thoughts, memories, triggers, etc... There's some really good information in that thread. I hope you check it out. For me, this definition has changed MANY times over the course of this quit as I have become more familiar with myself and with the quit process. Now I believe that a crave is that physical feeling of "I NEED A CIGARETTE!" When I smoked, I had those every 20-30 minutes. You know, that physical jitteriness and maybe a little tingling sensation. Although it's a physical symptom, and the nicotine is out of your system in 3 days, I have had these several months into the quit, although I can't remember when the last time was that I had an actual physical sensation that I felt like I needed a cigarette. I think it was August of last year if I'm not mistaken (before this quit that I'm on now.) The desire to smoke is more like a smoking thought. Smoking thoughts still happen for me. In fact, I had a few last night. Others have likened it to remembering an ex spouse or ex significant other. Sure, those thoughts may creep in from time to time, but that doesn't mean that we have to act on them! I hope that helps clear it up. Crave the Quit! Trailbum, SSC members have debated much on this topic. The opinions are pretty varied. Some believe that both physical and mental desires are cravings. Others attribute mental desires to associations your brain has made with smoking. Check out the thread Grace has bumped up for you for further reading. Our members will be along soon to share their thoughts. Danielle _____________________ The SSC Support Team
