I'm using the gum and using the gum, and well you get the idea. I started cutting them in half and alternating or more with regular gum. I've been doing that for the better part of 172 days. No, there isn't as much nic in the gum, low dose patch or lozenge, especially not in 1/2. I cannot go cold turkey. I did it once and it was so horrible, if I had to do it again, I wouldn't. This was relatively easy, relatively that is. Do whatever works for you. Do it as long as you need to. bold Thats a big question you have asked...I used the patch and did so for a number of personal reasons. It has worked well for me as once I got to 7mg, I simply stepped off with little problem. Its really difficult to say if one way is better than another. In the end though, there is nothing that can do the quitting except our own little selves. The most honest thing I can say is this. The addiction is so strong, and each of us is so entangled in its web, that our only salvation is in our own desire not to smoke, ever. I used the gum once very briefly, I didn't like it. But I think it's supposed to work much like patches if used correctly. It's supposed to make it easier so that you don't have to deal with "everything at once". The idea is you are getting a decreasing dose of nicotine as you learn to come up with coping strategies for the hand-mouth, the something to hold onto, the emotional aspects & psychological dependence. If you do that & follow the program correctly, by the time you're finished with the lowest dose patch or gum, you have only minor physical symptoms to deal with. Minor because there is comparatively little nicotine in your system. Cold turkey has never worked for me for longer than a few days. I have tried almost everything & have had the most success with the patch. Coming here was the best thing I ever did for myself but even so I don't think I could have kept a cold turkey quit. Ultimatey, we have to choose whatever method will work for us & sometimes it's trial & error. Just remember, if you try one way & slip, get right back on with some other way until you find what works. Rambler, with due respect, I strongly disagree with your opinion of nicotine addiction. Nicotine is highly addictive and is a dangerous and destructive drug in any form. Whichever you way you go, boldinaz, we're here for you anytime you need us. My problem was, I love the gum. I used it for a while, then started chewing Orbitz. I don't like the sweet stuff. I smoked for 50 years and I don't believe in a nicotine addiction. I was addicted to the smoking, the taste, and the "holding on to something". The gum helped a lot. Even if you "think" you are addicted to the gum, it is better than filling your lungs full of smoke. I never heard of anyone getting lung cancer from gum. whatever works for you boldinaz.. of course you will face the nicotine withdrawal symptoms when you quit the gum, but they will be easier l guess, and as you say, it is making it easier in the beginning. on the other hand, some of us choose to deal with everything together, but it could be overwhelming. there was a discussion about nicotine patch and cold turkey last week l guess, maybe it helps. l will try to find it for you.. either way, you are doing the right thing!! keep up the good work! Last two times I tried to quit using a combination of the inhalator and gum when it wasn't socially acceptable to puff on a plastic thingy. Both quits failed, one after 9 months and the other after 7 months. The upside I found was I got through the first few weeks pretty easy, but the downside is that I never broke the addiction (actually I didn't realise then quite how much nicotine they put into even the low strength gum - 2mg - it didn't register to me that is more than there is in a cigarette) last time I quit I managed 7 months but caved during a strong association...here I am almost a year later and I am on day 26 I think of my cold turkey quit - so much better for me this time - wow, so glad to have gone down this route... I understand though this is a personal decision and everyone needs to do it thier own way, however for me, no gum (and the inhalator) did not work... Hey I was wondering how many here have had success in fully quiting with using nic gum? Only problem I see with the gum is that wouldnt once you get off it you would be craving nicotine all over again? But what are you guys thoughts is nic gum a good way to go to deal with early quit cravings?
