Sfd, Please consult your doctor. When we smoke, we paralyze fine hairs in our lungs called cilia. Cilia are responsible for cleaning out our lungs of foreign pathogens. When we quit, our cilia begin to move again and cleaning out our lungs. This can also lead to the temporary worsening of asthma symptoms and allergies because there is such a build-up in your lungs from years of smoking. Danielle, Bilingual Support Specialist

Congrats on not quitting quitting, sfd. We know that smoking can mask many health problems and also that we self-medicate with nicotine. So when we quit, symptoms often surface that either were not there before, we blamed on something else, or we just had a smoke & ignored. I think you should see a doctor, sfd. Not to panic you, but it's a good idea to ensure your doctor knows what's going on with you. Tell her you've quit, or that you're planning to & relate the problems you've had with previous quits. She should be able to help you find the best method to give you the best chance of quitting for good, order any tests that might be indicated by your history, and recommend any lifestyle changes to further improve that chance. Give yourself any advantage you can, sfd. hi, i'm new. i've been battling with quitting for about a year now. the last quitting spell was three days and then yesterday i smoked one cigarette and then 4 today and then got rid of the pack i bought. one problem i've been having with quitting which seems to get worse after about a week of not smoking and has lasted as long as three weeks (until i slipped again) is extreme shortness of breath. almost like asthma. i'm young (26) so i doubt it's emphysema or anything like that. have any of you heard of people developing asthma after quitting? i had asthma and allergies when i was very young, but never while i smoked (16-26). thanks.
