Fear of being in dream or not knowing i'm awake

for 19 år siden 0 1 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I am so happy that i found this forum and discovered that I am not the only one that sufffers from this. Did anyone found out what it is called, is it really sleep paralysis, and is there a cure? I have been suffereing from this since I was a little child and sometimes it feels as though someone is physically holding me down. I can't speak or scream and sometimes I cannot even breathe. Is it a sleep disorder or an anxiety disorder no one seems to really know. :quest:

This is the weirdest thing! I've been going thru this "dreaming-awake" stuff too! But the thing is when I wake up finally I jump and start breathing hard. My husband says I'm going to hit the ceiling fan one of these times! I tried to tell my psychologist about it one time cause it happens at least weekly and she just gave me this weird look and just suggested I have a sleep test done for sleep apnea, which I didn't do.

you guys might think i am kooky but what you are describing is said by scientists to be some sort of sleep disorder (sleep paralysis) and some spiritual people to be "out of body". i have experienced this in a different way - sleep paralysis to the point where my whole body was buzzing all over (vibrations) and a roaring in my head, followed by a paralyzed feeling and trying to wake up, yelling and waking my boyfriend up so he can shake me. to me it feels like you are dead but you can still hear and think etc. very dark and disturbing fear. i think some people call them night terrors if it is the same thing? it does stem from anxiety and sleep disorders i have read.

I have had this same type of dream numerous times, it is as if i am trying desperately to wake up, and to move but i just can't, i even try yelling but no sound comes out of me, when i have those dreams they panick me to the point that i dont want to fall back asleep because im afraid that im going to go to sleep and never wake up. i wake up very glad to be awake from that terror, but petrified that i will have the same dream, i thought i was the only one going through this

I have had these episode since i was 12 years and never understand what was happening to me i used to think there was some sort of ghost attacking me. this will happen to me if i can't sleep, especially if i am awake for hours, it just happen. i feel as if i am awake, trying to move my arms and legs, try to wake my husband say prayers, but i guess it is some form of dream. i hope we can all get better. why do we have to suffer like this.

I've had this fear too, it's terrible. I attached it to driving. I'd be afraid to drive incase while I was driving I fell asleep. Then sometimes when I'd be doing anything, watching TV, reading anything at all. I'd fear that I was really physically behind the wheel of a car, and whatever it was I was doing was actually a dream. ergh, anyway I don't feel like this that much anymore. I think sometimes we can turn the panic to our advantage, in these kinds of situations. Like being so aware in this way, will make sure we don't ever do whatever it is we're scared of. Kind of trust the panic will take care of us, in a strange way Hope that made sense :confuse:

Hi Katie, As you can see you are not alone in experiencing this type of symptoms associated with panic. Please don't ever be afraid to tell your therapist about your symptoms, no matter how odd you think they are. Anxiety can have such an effect on our bodies that your therapist would not think you are crazy. Being able to openly discuss your symptoms will help you as they will be able to provide explanation as to why you feel this way and teach you coping mechanisms. Hey I know the feeling all too well... I have been suffering from that same situation for the past year. I want so badly to wake up, but I just cannot... I get confused and think that I am awake, but know that I am dreaming... I try everything to wake up and sometimes I think that I actaully have woken up and go and do something, like get a glass of water or turn on my computer... then I realise that I am still dreaming... sometimes it feels like hours... I try to move my arm or flex my feet... but nothing... no luck... i am dead asleep... i get panicked for hours once i do actaully wake up. hmm... maybe i am not actually typing this post (just kidding bad joke... but i hope it made one of you guys lagh a little) Seriously though, it is one of the worst triggers of my panic attacks in the mornings. I am scared to tell my therapist... in case she thinks i am crazy Katie

Ok, so I have totally had this - it is the freakiest thing on the face of the earth - I have actually dreamed that I am awake in my room that I can see what's going on around me but I KNOW I am not really awake - it sounds strange but I can NOT wake myself up. I have had this happen at night and have woken my husband up with my moaning and groaning. The weird thing is that when it happens I try to scream in my dream in order to get someone's attention so that they will wake me up. It is very scary and I don't know what causes it. I had it for the first time when I was about 16. You are not alone!
