Having had the experience of participating in a group such as this, I must say that I am a big proponent of support group formats. In all honesty I believe that had it not been for this site and the kind souls that inhabit its environs, I would be a smoker today. But I am not, and to know that I am no longer a slave to cigarettes is beyond value... Stay well and please do keep moving forward. Elaine So nice of you to say such wonderful things. I will continue to write on, if my musings are of some help. I do like to organize my thoughts about the addiction in forms that are at once entertaining and useful. To tell the truth this is the hardenst thing I have ever done in my wee existance on the planet and I feel very empathetic (as do many others here) toward folks who are trying to rid themselves of the addiction. It is hard to explain how one rewires the psychic circuits in a way that discourages smoking, but I KNOW it is possible. My base line belief is that pure abstinance is not the answer. What is required is a combination of will power, honesty with ones self and self awareness. How one does all of that is a matter for the individual to decide. But we must always remember that we did not smoke for no reason. (Sorry for all the negatives there, but it makes the point clearer than stating the same thing in the positive). The addiction is part and parcel of our internal conversation, our self image, our fears and insecurities. There are real reasons why we desire cigarettes. We must recognize this and find a way to decide not to smoke. This takes practice, but eventually, once we have faced enough potential smoking situations sans cigarettes, we are able to live breath and function in this world without resorting to slowly destroying our bodies. It makes no sense to destroy the vessel in order to protect the soul. In any case I will surely continue to contribute if I feel that I have an idea or two that will be of use. elaine: I understand the tiring nature of this and the feeling of futility that often accompanies our exasperation. However, it always helped me to remember that smoking is a cycle. It has a beginning and an end. And if we continue to participate in the cycle the end eventually becomes the beginning, and around we go again. The key for me was to recognize why I needed to participate in this particular alpha and omega merry-go-round. And then when the addiction called my name, in its thunderous way, I answered with an attitude of disinterest. That sounds rather simplistic, but it is the bear bones of the process. I eventually dug down deep and explored my motivation for ingesting what amounts to poison. I began to recognize those things that rang the nicotine bell in me and decided that I wasn't going to deal with them by engaging in slow suicide. There is time enough for passing from this existance I don't need to hurry the grim reaper along, he has his own schedule to keep. In short I found a way to adjust my response to outside and internal stimuli in a way that negated the need to smoke. I've had a perceptual make over. I'll not say any of this is easy, there where times when I was not fit to be around (good thing I am a solitary character by nature) , particularly in the early days of my quit. But I remained quietly constant in my approach. I hope that you will too. It is a dreadful addiction and needs to be dealt with from the inside out. Stay around here with these good folks.
