Crazy thoughts

how do you handle the "crazy" thoughts? my last panic attack, i thought I was going to hurt my children w/knives...it scared me so bad that everytime i'm near them now, i can feel my chest tightening up. I was to the point that i couldn't even look at a knife for fear i would hurt them. i love them dearly, but this is driving me nuts! i'm seeing a counselor tonight and i hope it helps, but how do other people handle this problem?

Maybe I can reassure you a bit more. Like I said in my earlier message, my mum had schizphrenia, and that it was my biggest fear too. When I lived with my mum she would hear people in the next house talking about her, go for late night walks in her nightie, have delusions of grandeur, thought messages were coming through the switched off t.v set to her, very insecure, forgetful ( although that may have been the meds ) tried to harm herself and others, have no recollection of doing so. Thats schizphrenia, and you are nothing like that, are you ? You're not going mad either, anxiety / panic is an illness yes, but thats all it is. Its possible to recover, definately Right now its playing on your worst fears, and believe me I've been there, its horrible, but now I just know that its a condition that I have, that sometimes its okay, other times maybe not so good, where I can't see the wood for the trees, but please believe me when I say you're not going mad, nor the start of some terrible mental illness. Please read the book I suggested, it might help seeing it in black and white, written by an expert. Good luck, I wish you all the best.

Hi everyone just wanted to tell you what my psychologist told me.The first time i saw him i was convinced i had schizophrenia but he said if the voices in your head are your own then you arnt schizophrenic its if they are other peoples voices (outside voices) then you should get help. Wow thankgod I have been feeling like this for about a month now , on and off but mostly on . I felt like i was the only one who felt like i was going crazy . I dont have the pnysical symptoms anymore ,i used to feel like i was having a heart attack but now i just feel like im going crazy . I have been working this program and almost gave up because I thought if I wasnt having the physical symtoms of a panic attack then it must be something else . But seeing that other people feel the same way makes me feel so much better . I really do fear going crazy and sometimes it gets really bad but i always return to reality thank god , but sometimes i get so bad that i cant get myself to believe that i'll ever feel normal again . Wow I cant thank you guys enough , i printed these posts so i can read them when I feel like im loosing it . Please if anyone has advice on how to deal with this please let me know . Can I suggest that you read any of the books by Claire Weeks ? She talks about this problem and about how primarily its caused by tired or fatigued nerves. The best I think is called ' self help for your nerves'. Its old but quite relevant I think. You'll never do any of the horrible things you're thinking off honestly. I also thought I may have schizophrenia after my first panic attack, or that it was the start of severe mental health problems, that I'd end up institutionalised, probably because thats my greatest fear ( my mum was schizophrenic ), I never thought I was having a heart attack like may other people. I think it just plays on your worts fears. But its just a panic attack, thats all, horrible to go through, but it doesn't mean any more than that. Good luck

I have been reading all these posts and i thought it was just me! Though I dont have any thoughts of hurting people etc..., I have a terrible fear that I will develop full blown OCD. I do suffer with lots of irrational thoughts, Its the compulsion side of things that bothers me. Though would I be right in thinking that if I had been suffering with panic disorder for 9 years with no compulsions, It is highly unlikely they will start now? I gave myself a panic attack today fuelled purely by this fear, It was horrible. thanks for your help chardthefish

Wow. I can't really add anyting new to this discussion. It's just really nice to know that other people feel the same way. I started getting panic attacks around the same time my sis tried to committ suicide and so I've always been afraid of that. I avoid bridges and other high up places. It's been 16 yrs and no attempts yet but still afraid of it. Most annoying. But nice to know you're all here. :)

Thank you so much for the advice, it would seem that my fear of schizophrenia is just a new fear to add to my list of ways that panic presents it self to me. I appreciate your help.

Hi BC3, I have noticed a lot of people on this site have a big fear of sciztophrenia{excuse spelling} but we all have the same thing in common, its just anxiety because we feel so out of control we think that we have something more wrong with us, which is again just the anxiety and thoughts. I have read that panic disorder can not turn into any other mental illness, and because we think we are crazy only proves that we are not because if we were crazy we wouldnt know that we were, we wouldn't even think our thoughts were adnormal. I can completely relate to what you all here are saying espcially the irrational sleep walking and hurting some one fear. I know thats my anxiety pressing those images in to the front of my thoughts, and they will never happen. But lately I have been having problems with disjointed thoughts, and sorta repeating ideas... I am beginning to fear schizophrenia... Is this 'mind noise' I have been experiencing one of the normal symtoms of panic?
