Well, I know that a lot of people think that the meds balance out some chemical thing in our heads but all it does is adjust your adrenaline so it's easier to deal with things. Adrenaline changes all day depending on your emotions and the thoughts running through your head. Adrenaline is a natural body function and is not an imbalanced chemical the way med companies want you to believe - they are selling a product and the chemical imbalance thing is a very powerful marketing tool, look at how many people take them on that assumption. The problem is that when we get off the meds, the adrenaline is still there - as it's supposed to be. It is a natural and important bodily function. If it was chemical, the meds would take it away - they don't! The reason you are having panic attacks again is because the Paxil is out of your system and now your adrenaline is responding the way it's supposed to be responding to your thoughts and emotions. It is the manner in which we choose to respond to these bodily functions that make us panic. Attitude is everything!! Everyone gets these bodily functions, we are just very in tune with them and have very over active imaginations causing our thoughts to take off in a fit of panic. You're having panic attacks again because the meds are gone - your thoughts are still there and will always be there. You need to learn how to retrain your thoughts and the way you respond to things that come up - bodily functions, life's problems, etc.... Use the CBT program offered here. It will teach you how to do just that. I promise!!

I was on Paxil for 18 months and thought I had everything under control. had a real bad attack and am back into the same boat, almost seems worse. Hang in there, and give yourself some time to adjust to the meds. Take Care Fae

hey vickers, I came off Paxil in January. In May, 4 months later, my panic attacks came back with a vengeance. At this point, they are still pretty bad. My therapist thinks that it might have to do with my coming off Paxil, as my stressors haven't really changed. Maybe it's the brain re-wiring itself? sparkelz, welcome to the site. This disorder is tough, but manageable (most of the time). My tip to you is to get a guided relaxation tape, probably a couple of them, and try to do them at least every other day. It really helps me, and I notice when I don't do the tape, my number of panic attacks increase.

Sparkelz, it is tough to go through this, I have agoraphobia and there will be days when I just am to afraid to get out of my house. Just remember you are not alone, are there any suport groups you can go to in person?

Hey Sparkelz! I've had panic / anxiety for about 12 years now and was on Paxil for 7 of those years. I recently got off the Paxil because it worked so well that I was thinking I had this thing beat. Panic / anxiety has reentered my life however. It's been about four months since I got off the Paxil and even though there are days that I would love to get back on it, like today, I know that it would be pointless because it wouldn't make this go away. I have done a lot of research since getting off the meds and I now realize that this has to come from within ourselves. We all have it within ourselves to beat this - I have to believe that because it's the only thing keeping me going right now! We all tend to rely on things outside of ourselves to get through this like meds, other people, or whatever else makes us comfortable. The problem is, those other things are not always going to be there and then we are back to just ourselves. Remember when you are having a really hard time that you can depend on yourself and that you can get through it. Have you tried starting the Panic Program yet? It's a free 12 week course on learning Cognitive Behavior Therapy. It teaches you how to depend on yourself again. It takes determination and work, but it is really helpful! Try it if you haven't already. On those days that are just too hard to deal with, the people on the support group know exactly how you feel every single day and we will try to help you up. You are not alone! Hang in there!
