nervous stomach

Hi Sue. I can totally relate to the knot in the tummy. I have that every day. Some days are worse than others. I recently found out by my counselor that this feeling of knots will come with the panick attacks, stress, nerves, which n my case all those symptoms go directly to the bowls and intestines. (people have different ways of dealing with their worries, fears, anxieties, and for the most part it generates to the stomach area) My stomache bubbles and pops and almost feels like it is having a hard time digesting what little food I eat. So, even though you may not feel as if you are having a panick attack or any anxiety, with out you realizeing it you are generating it to your stomache. Or as my general physcician says..I.B.S which is due to stress, nerves, anxiety. I hope I have helped you out some...I have a battle with the stomache every day...diareah, nausea, which is primarily caused from the anxiety, stress, panick attacks and my OCD. Take care, write soon and let me know how you are doing...........Kimmy

definately nerves! Before i had a bit of control over this, i used to actually worry every time i had to leave the house, especially on long car rides, because i was SURE i'D need to run to the bathroom, if you know what i mean! I'd actually start to spot where the bathroom was in every new place i went. I've managed to get control with CBT and i tell myself "I've been checked out by my doc, i'm healthy, so it's just my anxiety playing tricks on me and i can control this" and i do. Good luck!

Dear Sue, I just happened to read your post. I am going through exactly the same thing right now, my stomach hurts 24/7 the only time I get some relief is when I sleep, sometimes it wakes me up. My upper stomach burns and naws, like an ulcer, just a few minutes ago I had a real sharp intense pain and I thought an ulcer perforated or something, and my lower stomach cramps and feels so gassy, I can hardly eat, I thought it was re-starting the Paxil, perhaps it is nerves are doing it, its a vicious cycle, my stomach hurts and it makes my panic worse and my stomach hurts worse. I worry I have an ulcer that will bleed or perforate and I am trying SO hard not to entertain those scary negative thoughts, does anyone else experience this? THe Doctor says to take "pepcid" along with the Paxil and Klonopin but it really does not help, sometimes late at night I can eat some cheese and it stays down, but the constant nausea and pain scare me and that sharp pain floored me. Maybe its the Paxil and nerves a combination. Thanks, God bless, Debbie.

Hi Sue, I totally know where you are coming from. I had a fairly major panic/anxiety attack the weekend before last (after a year or more of virtually nothing). Since then I've 'recovered' to a point where I can function again, however my nervous stomach continues, especially in the mornings. Like you, once I get to work, by about 11am or noon, I am feeling much better, maybe even hungry for lunch! I think it is low level anxiety. I agree with Caitlin that you should see a doc - many, many people who have never had anxiety can have an upset stomach just from stress alone. This may be separate to your panic problem completely, or a much lower intensity version of your anxiety. It's so difficult to know sometimes. Either way, see what your GP says as there maybe something out there that can ease the pain for you. I'm seeing my GP next week so if I find out anything interesting I'll let you know. Cheers and take care, Beetlegirl

Hi Sue. I think it's 100% pure stress. Even when you're not actually having a panic attack, this disorder keeps you tense - emotionally, physically, and biochemically. When my anxiety got really really bad a few months ago, I began suffering terrible and disabling stomach pain and cramps, bad enough to have me doubled over in pain or in a fetal position on the floor. As I am beginning to feel a bit more in control of this disorder and it's symptoms, those intense stomach pains are fading and getting less frequent, but I still feel "messed up" inside in terms of my digestion, stomach, etc. And I do think that it's just my body's way of coping with the underlying stress. You could try some over-the-counter stuff like Maalox or Tums, they sometimes help me when I just have a "knot". Or you could talk to your doctor if the pain just won't go away. Good luck! Caitlin

Hi, I haven't had a panic attack for a couple of months now, but since I had my first one over two years ago, and then almost daily for 8 months, then less frequently thereafter, but what I do have that frightens me, is a nervous stomach, every day to some degree. Does anybody else get this physical symptom ? What do you do about it ? I go to bed feeling okay, bit wake up, and there it is, that knot in my stomach again. I don't know why as I don't feel particularly anxious about anything. It does go throughout the day, if I emmerse myself in work, so generally by mid-day its gone, and then the whole cycle repeats itself. Why ? I really hate it, and it does frighten me as I think I'm going to be ill again ( like having them daily for 8 months ), although like I said I haven't actually had a panic attack for some time now. I don't understand why I should have the physical symptoms, but no panic, and the only anxiety is about this knot in my stomach. Can anybody relate to this ?
