pregnancy and anxiety

for 17 år siden 0 3 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I had my first anxiety attack at 24 weeks pregnant and it was awful for sure but I am at 30 weeks now and am taking medication (zoloft and ativan which I can take while breastfeeding I'm told) that has been okayed by 4 different doctors. I was reluctant to take the medication at first but I was debilitated by my attacks. If you have a fear of suffocation it is hard during the end of the second and beginning of the third trimester...hard but not impossible.

I had my daughter since having my panic disorder. The hormones during the first trimester were no worse than my normal, and it actually helped that I could attribute my feelings & physical sensations to the pregnancy. After that it actually got much better and I was calmer than ever. The best part I think is that I let go of my fear of what other people thought of me. If I was having a lot of anxiety THEY blamed it on the pregnancy and were much more supportive or understanding-and that was a freeing feeling. Many said I handled it better than most women cause I understood what was happening when I did have fluctuations. The important thing is about 2-3 weeks AFTER giving birth (when the hormones tank out), I had my husband drive me places even when I still felt wiped out. Some fresh air & pampering really helped. I was not on any meds while trying to get pregnant (which took a year and a half) and while pregnant. I spent a lot of time reading pregnancy books to help me through the anxiety of "what to Expect" while pregnant & how my body was doing, it really helped. I hope this helps, You can do it!

I too am very interested in this topic. My husband and I were planning on starting trying for child #2 in June. Then "this" happened to me and now I'm afraid we can't start until I'm "better"...but I'm afraid I'll never really be better, and will never manage preganancy and the first year at home...let alone a hectic life with two children.. But, I'm glad to hear that most people felt better with pregnancy.

I had my second son 9 months ago. I've had anxiety and panic for the last three years. I took my meds(effexor xr) thw whole time I was pregnant. and the funny thing is is that I went from having panic attacks 3 or 4 times a week to not having any at all through my pregnancy. Don't be afraid to have a baby. you'll get through it. and the pregnancy is the best part.Take care!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!

Tiluli, I work in Canada as a registered nurse in a maternal and child unit. There are many mothers who are on medications due to anxiety, panic and depression. It is important to discuss options with your doctor when planning a family. Your doctor will have the proper training and knowledge to ensure a healthly and safe pregnancy. Hope this helps, Melanie

Hi! I found this topic extremely interesting. I am not married yet....so i won't be having children any time soon hehe. But, I do worry about my future. I worry about how i will be when i'm pregrant, during the delivery, and as a mother (with a baby dependent on ME). It freaks me out and i wonder how bad my panic will be then. But, after reading what caitlin and other people had to say about their experiences, its very comforting to know this. Caitlin, the way you described your experience was very reassuring. I also hope i have a calm and peaceful experience in the future as well! I wish you luck with your pregnancy and you will be a great mother!

Hello, I thought I would reply because I took meds before, during, and after my 3rd pregnancy. I was (and still am) on 20 mg of paxil a day. We had a healthy baby girl who is now three and perfect. The only difficulty due to the meds was that she was very, very sleepy her first few weeks and wouldn't nurse enough so we ended up having to bottle feed her. But it turned out to be the right choice for us.

Thanks for your advice and nice thoughts, guys! You know, i've often heard that nervous people suddenly felt much better during pregnancy. I'm sure it's not the case for everyone, but still, it's nice to know it's happened to you girls. I actually stopped taking meds in order to get pregnant because I know it's not the best thing and I thought it was the best reason to try to finally take control of my anxiety with more natural methods. They say if you take meds while pregnant, the baby goes through withdrawal at birth! I thought that is a horrible way to start out life, don'T you think? But the docs say sometimes it'S better for the baby to keep taking the meds rather than totally freaking out without, but I still wanted to try this. I have been completely off for over 3 months now. What got me worried is I was fine and ready when I was taking meds, but now i'Ve been slowly readapting to life without meds and it's not easy. So I worried that freaking out while pregnant... ugh! But it's true that it's a big thing and normal to be concerned about it. So thanks again for your comments. I'll let you know the minute I get pregnant!

Dear Tululi, First of all I agree whole-heartly with Catlin, you would make a fantastic Mother, I have prayed you concieve soon and lit my Blessed Mother candle for you. When I became pregnant I did not have panic disoder that came just 5 years ago, I did have real bad high-anxiety and health anxiety, I worried alot my whole pregnancy I had some problems which settled down and had a beautiful son. Its funny through after he was born, I totally forgot about my self, my health anxiety went away and all my worry and concern were directed towards him, which I think was a good thing, I did not take meds, some women do some don't, I came across a site one day called the "Baby Center" where women post and talk and their were some great posts about meds and pregnancy. Let me know how you are, I just got off the phone with a christian counselor and I am still kind of reeling from it, I am going to write a post about it and when you have time let me know what you think. I went to 20 miligrams of Paxil today, I am queasy and my vision is blurred {that scares me about the vision} but trying to hold my own. Talk to you soon, I hope you are having another great day, God bless, Debbie.
