Effexor side effects

Hi Gina and Melanie, I want to first say that I agree wholeheartedly with everything that Melanie has stated. And I would encourage you to call her with any specific questions you may have. I too believe that depression is correlated with family history. But I would take it a step further and say that family history predisposes us to depression; but it is most often activated by emotional trauma, usually in childhood. That has been my personal experience. My mother suffered from severe depression, which in the '50s and 60' was thought to be a self-inflicted disease. The doctors couldn't help her, so she self-medicated, which tore our family apart and made for a hellish childhood. I won't bore you with the details. All this activated my disposition to anxiety and depression at age 11. The rest is history, as they say. : ) I'm glad to hear you're staying physically active. Have you ever tried yoga? The practice is particularly useful for opening up the body and mind; especially breathing patterns, which some researchers have linked to depression. Call a local yoga studio. You can usually find a beginner's class for 8.00 a session. If you find the New Age aspect of it offensive, just ignore it and practice the poses and breating techniques. I wish you and your son the best, and please keep in touch with the forum. We enjoy hearing from you. Namaste, Runpin

Hi Gina, I have been reading material on depression and found a study from University of Pittsburgh's School of Medicine. This study had found that, "nearly half of all people who develop recurring depression before the age of 25 have a family member who also suffers from one or more mood disorders" (Mclimans, R., 2004). Researchers and doctors have found that, "parents, siblings and children of individuals with recurring early-onset major depression, are eight times more likely to develop a mood disorder than the rest of the general population." (Mclimans, R., 2004) "This form of depression runs strongly in families, is associated with other mental disorders that include prominent disturbances of mood, and has a significant negative impact on the health and longevity of patients and their family members."(Mclimans, R., 2004) If you continue to have any questions or concerns with this topic then please feel free to continue to post in our support group, or contact me directly at melanie.pereira@v-cc.net.

Hi Runpin: I too have stuggled with depression in various forms for some time and have tried other meds as well. (Zoloft, Prozac, even Lithium at one point, however, that was a misdiagnosis as I am not manic) I do try to exercise as much as I can. I find that physical activity helps a lot. The very worst thing is the fact that my son (22) seems to have inherited this from me... Is that possible???

Hi Gina, I don't mean to pry, but are you doing anything else other than medication to help relieve the depression? I can humbly suggest a few things that may help you deal with the side effects, and maybe the depression itself. I have struggled with depression and anxiety for nearly 40 years, and have learned a few things about dealing with it. Namaste, Runpin

Thanks Runpin, I will make an appointment with my doctor. The paranoia scares me. I have been dealing with depression for awhile now and Effexor really seemed to be doing the job until recently. I don't know if I like all these side effects; I think they should have subsided by now!!!. I have experienced dizziness and lots of the other listed side effects as well. The vertigo is the worst, and of course the weight gain. What has anyone else experienced????

I have not experienced paranoia, but did have sweating when I first started on the drug. Things seem to be evening out now, though the sexual side effects have not subsided yet. If the paranoia gets too intense, I would definitely talk to your doctor. Namaste, Runpin

Canuck, Glad to hear you're able to see how your depression is affecting your life and the others around you. It's a big step forward. Don't worry about the sexual side effects until you have them. It occurs in about half the people who take the drug, usually right away. If you do have them, talk to your doctor. He/she may be able to prescribe something to help that. As far as mixing the Effexor with alcohol, it has not been a good experience for me. I tried it a few weeks back and ended up with heart palpitations. Fortunately, I'm really not attached to the alcohol, so I've stayed away from it. All things considered, I would make a doctor appointment for whenever they can give you one. If you don't need it when the time comes, cancel. There are a few sites online that have doctors who give general advice to questions regarding drugs, etc. You may want to check one out. I posted here a few days ago, just starting on effexor 75 mg. My head feels much clearer. My wife said I was smuthering her, I would call her like 6 times a day at work. I wouldn't go anywhere unless I was with her. I wouldn't make any decisions on my own because I was afraid of making the wrong one. Since I started this medication I can see how my actions have effected my mariage. I can see now that in order to go on with our life together, we have to have our own separate lives as well. Before the medication I had no energy to go out and do things, I hope this changes. The only thing I want more than to be with her for ever is to feel better about my self and for my self. As for sexual side effects, I am not sure what to expect. Can viagra be detrimental to the effects of my effexor?? Also it says that drinking isn't suggested on this. Can I go out and have a night on the town with my friends every now and then?? I am just not sure what it will do, my doctor never gave me any details. I would just go back and ask him but we have a doctor shortage here so I can't get another appointment for like 2 months. Thank you to all who listen. Canuck

Hi, Runpin here. I started this post and want to thank those who have responded. I have been on Effexor for about a month now, and it has definitely reduced my anxiety and depression. The initial side effects--sweating, lightheadedness, rapid heartbeat--have pretty much subsided. The sexual side effects continue, though. I'm going to give it another month, then see my doctor if it continues. I don't want to go off the Effexor, but can't sacrifice my sex life either. I would encourage anyone reading this post, that may suffer from anxiety and/or depression, to look into a moderate to a vigorous exercise program. Yoga and Pilates are very beneficial; low impact, stress relieving and it gets you out and with people. You will likely be suprised at the number of people who use Yoga to deal with anxiety and depression. If you are truly interested, I can recommend a few books that have helped me. I would also suggest you take a look at your daily diet. We truly are "what we eat." Foods loaded with saturated fats, sugars, sodium and other preservatives definitely affect the body chemistry, which is a significant factor in anxiety and depression. Just my .02 worth. Sorry if I sound preachy. Good luck to you all, and Namaste. Runpin
