furgittit,

Food choices can be so unique with every individual. You have already received some great advice from wildcat already. Was there something you wanted to try that was suggested?

Take some time for yourself to do something you enjoy.

Let us know how the rest of your night goes, we are here for you!

hi furgittit,

do you have a problem with acid reflux?  i do and with out meications I cannot touch any coffees the milds includes. Neither can I enjoy any of the black nor green teas only the white and jasmin.  And only some of the herbal infusions.

It has gotten to the point that i have to go for a barium swallow because I have food coming up at all the wrong moments so i might have the beginnings of an ulcer or a hernia that has been acerbated by my anxiety!!!

Lettuce is a bitter taste and tomate is acid.  Potatoe is starches.  What tastes and textures garnish your plate?  What give you some pleasure to share with your family?  Do you take you family grocery shopping and ask what choices would make everyone happy?   When children are small the wonder of discovering where food came from did not spark you?

Sometimes it is not the organized activities that are inportant but the small day to day moments we need to focus on!

Thank you Wildcat,

It is somewhat uplifting to hear that there is someone out there that can actually find pleasure in physical activities I don't like, in foods I cannot eat and in drinks I cannot drink.

I only like 1 type of lettuce, 1 type of potatos, no coffee, no tomatos.  I am very limited in my selections as I do not want to vomit.  This is due to the clean your plate, you can't have anything else unless this is finished attitude I grew up with.  I have attempted to retry the things I do not like and the same thing happens every time, the smells, tastes and texture make me gag and vomit.  Please do not bring coffee in my home, van or anywhere near me, that will send me running to the nearest washroom.

I  cannot seem to find pleasure in physical activity (except sex, for obvious reasons).  I end up more tired and I cry because of the exhaustion still trying to figure out what everyone else finds so attactive about physical activity.  I guess the only thing that makes me feal better is the whining, moaning  and arguing :).

Enjoy your snow shovelling, I will wait for the snow again (and my family to ignore this chore) and go out and do it because it has to be done, enjoy your coffee and if for a moment you could send some of that feeling my way I would appreciate it.

Have a great evening.

HI fURGETIT,

to be active I try to incorporate it within my day.  I have tried several gyms and hate going to work on a machine.
So in the winter, the mall near my house has an early morning walking club.  I try to go three times a month and get my shopping done after a good hour of cardio and sweating. It is just as the stores open at 12 on sunday so there are very few people.  THen there is the shoveling of the snow, a strength exercise.  When it does not snow we have to take a bit off from around the foundations or have water seepage in the spring (and I bring it across the street to the park).

The three other seasons there is the run after out kids.  Our city has different types of nature parks... so what we would have spent in gym memberships we rent kayaks and canoes.  We go to see the wildlife that insists on living side-by-side with humans. And there are always little activities - treasure hunts in the woods and movies in the park.  And if we bring the cousins it is kind the lost kids in the woods!!!

Food is a problem!  I know that being bipolar means my body will push me to eat carbs and fats to feed a mood swing!  Or sugar to head towards the other pole... I recognise these as triggers and try to find "good" combinations.  I am seeing a nutritionist now once every two months.  We add in a goal each time !  THe first month was to add fibre.  Not get rid of all my usual habits, just add one good one!  Next was to add water - fiber with no water was causing problems!!!  Then she wanted me to do something regularly for 10 minutes every week!  that was all.   Now I am working on what does hungry feel like (I each routeinly and stuff myself so as to not feel the acid reflux problem).

In the nice seasons I love food with texture and colour and taste.  So we drive to the local farms and pick up fresh produce. In the winter we go to the farmers markets.  We know a few and talk about the season and what they are going to plant to have some idea what is coming up!  It gives up hope that nice weather will come!  and a chance to experiment!!  Why are there so many types of plum tomatoes and why so many colours?  why does lettuces come in different forms and colours and tastes?  which are better in wraps in salades and in the bar-b-que?  Potates from all over in different soils have different tastes , then there are each type of potatoe that is good for something specific... and the meat cuts from different cultures.

And the drink of the goddess - Coffee!  to sit back for a moment and see all these people negotiating their produce and their price with a tiny cup of elixer is like spending a day with Diana herself!  And is a day of heavy lifting and walking so of exercise!

Faryal,

Thank you for your response.  I need to ask, why is it that in order for something to make you happy it has to do with physical activity?  So far, everyone I have received suggestions from seems to think that this is the case.  I for one enjoy sleeping and doing nothing.  I do way too much in a day to get any actual enjoyment out of physical activity, (aside from sex and I can't go doing that all the time, now, can I?)

The feeling of alive occurs every morning when I drag myself out of bed, get ready for work, go to work or the myriad of medical appointments for myself, my husband and my children, and continues throughout the day until I fall into bed and cry myself to sleep at night.  I don't look forward to any one thing in particular just "being" is what I have at this point.

I do have alot of anger over all of the issues surrounding my life, so yeah, being alive is not fun and there is not much that makes me truly happy at this point.  I do find some enjoyment playing mario party with my family but then again that gets shot down because it is "not healthy" and then I feel bad for feeling good.  Big cycle for me, what makes me feels good, makes me feel bad.  What is "supposed" to make me feel good makes me feel bad.  Feeling bad makes me feel bad.  Not pleasing everyone makes me feel bad, not pleasing myself makes me feel bad, doing everything for everyone makes me feel bad, doing very little for everyone makes me feel bad.  Doing things for myself makes me feel bad.

My one true goal is to stop the negative thinking.  It is a big goal.  Every time something new comes up, I say to myself, I will try not to let my previous experience drag me down to thinking negatively.  This doesn't always work but hey, at least it is a start.  The obstacle to accomplishing my goals is myself and I will have to figure out a way that works for me (not a study, not a commercial, not the "majority rules") to accomplish this.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Wildcat,

I apologize for rhe attack yesterday.  I will not make any excuses for my behaviour and unfortunately at the time, you were in my line of fire.  I will not personally attack anyone here again.

While I don't mind "discussing", which is "in my opinion" a sharing of different views without discounting any one idea in particular.  Rather than quoting studies, I would rather hear what has worked for you and others who actually have personal experiences and personal views, to back up their rationalizations.  The studies that are performed are "paid"(key word) to be performed by people and companies who want to "force" their opinions and beliefs on others with the actual sharing of ideas.

I am looking for others who have "actual" experiences within their lives to share with, rather than the sharing of the quotes and studies that are being force fed by health care providers, governments, private companies etc.  I am sick to death of the do this and do that, that I keep hearing "because they say so" attitudes.

So Wildcat, please share with me "your" personal experiences with respect to lifestyle changes and what benefits they have brought you.  I am truly interested in "your" personal opinion, thoughts and experiences.  I, have shared some of my own and would dearly appreciate hearing some of "yours".

Thank you for your time and patience.

Hi Furgittit,

Comments on this support site are not only appreciated when they fall in line with what the other 85% thinks or advocates. What makes this support community interesting and wonderful is the unique perspective that each individual brings to the forums in an effort to help themselves and provide support for others who may be struggling.

If you are the only proof you need as to what works for you, then that should be sufficient in order for you to determine how to progress towards your objectives. We are all here to support and encourage - nothing more and nothing less. If for example, jumping on a trampoline makes you feel happy and alive, then that is what you should do! If we could, we would jump with you.

You have had a lot on your plate recently - this would be overwhelming for anyone. There seems to be some resentment and anger over these issues which could be contributing to your negative mental state at the moment.

Consider reflecting on what the true obstacles to your goals really are. Is is possible that your own views could be hindering your progress?

Find what brings out the best in you and go for it! You are a unique individual and you certainly should not be made to fit in a box.

Good luck,

Im really new here - I hope you dont mind me entering the conversation.
I think 'exercise' can be a 4 letter word. I used to work out for the sake of working out, but being very goal oriented, I lost interest quickly. Then I saw a poster for a 1/2 marathon; suddenly I had a goal to work towards. I really got into running, not as that nasty exercise word, but as a means to accomplishing a goal. That developed in to triathlon, which is now a passion of mine. I never 'exercise'. I train, i work towards a goals of finishing the next race. I guess the point is, if you dont enjoy it, or cant find a motivator to get you to the the gym, or around the block, or on your bike, then it will be very difficult, and probably counter productive. Im a huge advocate of being active, because it works for me. My hope for you, furgittit, is that you find something exciting that works for you, helps you out of the mental blues you are experiencing, and can become a part of your lifestyle that will last.
Just know that you as important as an individual, and not just another 'depression statistic'

cheers.
