I came to SSC last April because I knew I wanted to quit. My attempts to quit smoking spanned 40 years with no success. I have had many health problems over the years but was not successful in quitting until I had done much damage to my lungs. I thought when I quit smoking my health would improve, which it did for a short time. However, I had a chest cat scan two days ago, The doctor called me last night and said I have good news and bad news. The good news is NO CANCER .... the bad news is your emphysema is much worse. Quitting has not been an easy road for me after smoking for 60 years. I'm sure it was harder to quit than it would have been many years ago. I WAITED TOO LONG. I have too much permanent damage to really get healthy. HOWEVER, I know I am better now than I would have been had I not quit smoking. MY MESSAGE TO YOU.....If you are thinking of quitting stay with SSC ..... plan your quit, prepare yourself and have a positive attitude. YOU CAN DO THIS and I pray you will before you do permanent damage to your health. Hugs to all you quitters, Nan My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/18/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 290 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 6,681 Amount Saved: $1102 Life Gained: Days: 36 Hrs: 7 Mins: 27 Seconds: 50

Nan - i always think of you with such awe and respect. To have undertaken this after so many years of smoking. You have always shown such grace and commitment in your quit. If there was a hall of fame for the most graceful quitter, I would nominate you for there! And I remember your first shy words, and how you have overcome that to reach out to others. Now you are a success, and while the medical news is relieving but not all good, there is NOTHING that can take away the pride you should feel about your accomplishment. Kudos to you!!! In the meantime, I shall keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Dear dear Nan: Any form of COPD is devastating and my wife Roxanne is about half speed with her lung capacity. I lay awake at night and listen to her struggle trying to get air into her lungs. I wonder some nites if she is going to die on me and frankly, it scares the hell out of me. The message here is for all to heed; it is never too early or late to quit smoking, just quit. I will keep you in my prayers Nan and you know that all things are possible. Keep the faith. Your friend Duffis

Nan, I've thought of you ever since I saw your post in the 6-12 Club. I'm relieved, as I know you are, that there was no cancer. I'm sorry though, to hear that the emphysema has worsened. After 60 years of smoking, it had to be a HUGE undertaking to even begin your quit...but here you are at nearly 300 days. That takes a strong and determined person. By quitting, you've not only slowed the progression of the illness...but you also helped the rest of your body strengthen in order to fight and withstand it better. I'm so proud of you, Nan...and keeping you in my prayers. Dear Nan, You know you are one of my all time heroes. Im thrilled there is no cancer, but very sorry to hear the emphysema is worse. I, too, feel as if I waited too long so many wasted years slowly killing ourselves with smoking. Thank God we finally quit. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Nan, thank you for being here. Your presence at the SSC is a wonderful inspiration. Love, Hummy
