Lady, I think when you go from low activity to a few miles your body is saying whoa I am not used to this. Like everyone said start slow and build up. When I started working out with my exercise ball and weights I could barely curl 3lbs, then I moved up to 4lbs, 6 pounds and now 8 pounds and I about reading to increase again. I have been doing this at least 3 times a week, 30 minutes for a year, I have lost 20 pounds, but am way tighter and stronger. It took me years to put on this weight, it won't come off overnight. Good for you for starting!! I hate doing it but always feel great after I work out. ;p Sue (Sparky, I ate your cookie ;p) My Milage: My Quit Date: 5/3/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 110 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,100 Amount Saved: $192.50 Life Gained: Days: 10 Hrs: 11 Mins: 50 Seconds: 58

Lady, easy does it. Break the work out down until you can add 5 or 10 minutes. A few years ago when I started walking, all I heard was the 15 min mile. I worked so hard to get to that and did nothing but screw up my feet and legs. I had to stop for awhile and did some exersices to get them back. Today I walk at a pace that is comfortable for "me". They say as long as you move and eat right (very hard at times) it will leave you :eg: It took awhile to put the weight on, don't expect it to go away over night. You will do this. Keep the Quit Sparky PS: did you notice I ate the cookie LOL My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/30/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 113 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,130 Amount Saved: $339.00 Life Gained: Days: 15 Hrs: 6 Mins: 10 Seconds: 40

Lady, I think your healing was done long ago :) However, it is not uncommon to feel different when stepping up the exercise or changing your routine. Your body is experiencing different muscle use and this may be the cause. I always suggest that you take the time to check with your doctor to rule out anything medical :) Josie, Support Specialist

I'm with Rusty & penguin, Lady. It might not seem like a lot but when you think about it, 3.5 miles is alot of sustained cardio. You will get better results if you start off slower & build up. It won't take long before that 3.5 miles seems like nothing, you will fel your lung capacity and stamina increase week by week & it is an amazing motivator! Good for you for making the commitment! Lady As has been the case with me, I start out too hard, then quickly lose the motivation to continue at that pace, or I get injured because we have put too much stress on muscles, ligaments, and tendons that need gradual stengthening. Happy to hear you are making a commitment to get fit and get healthier, but take it slower, my girl. You'll actually get there faster that way. Lady, if you just started on the bike and treadmill, it might be too much at first. When you start any new exercise, it's safer to build up gradually. The muscles you use for golf and the energy you exert are different from those used for walking or biking. They tell people starting a walking program to start with just 10 or 15 minutes a day for a week and then add 5 minutes each week after that. It helps you build up stamina as well as build the habit. Thanks Pen and Rusty! I thought maybe something was wrong with me. Rusty, Do you think 3.5 miles is too much? It took less than one hour and I really need to lose some weight. Since taking this job I've had a physical and a complete health screening. The results were not all that great. I'm going to really start having problems if I don't do something quick. I would appreciate your opinion. I know you know a lot about diet and exercise. I find it difficult to continue my regular walking program in the heat of summer, because my lungs and heart have to work so much harder. When I stay on top of it...exercising 4 or 5 days a week...I can feel my stamina building up. Lady, didn't you just get started with the gym recently? It takes time to build up your strength...3.5 miles of cardio is a lot! Be patient and don't bite off too much in the beginning. Build up to it.
