Thyroiditis and depression

Since I have been given double my dosage of Thyroxin, this week, I have been able to decrease my anxiety medication by 1/2, and I do not need to take any more sleeping pills. It is wonderful. On the other hand this week I have caught a cold, so I have not been out much and have not had to experience any anxiety or subsequent depression this week. Nothing bad has happened, other than I am bored staying in bed trying to rest and get over my cold. I am very happy that you found out about your physical problem, and I believe many more of us have physical problems that have not been uncovered yet, or have not yet become bad enough for medication to be prescribed. I believe that the older you get, the worse the physical conditions get, and then they learn the real reasons for the problems we suffer. It is too bad that it has to be a critical condition in many cases before doctors will treat the patients, and then it is often the wrong medications that are prescribed in the meantime...Good for you! I am proud of you!

I just found out I have hypothyroidism. Most of my pdocs have wanted to have my thyroid function checked for years, but I couldn't because my medical phobia kept me from getting a blood draw (see success stories for more about that). I'm going to be starting meds for it soon (levoxyl) and am wondering how much this will help my depression. When you started meds did it help your depression? Just a weird thought--if it affects dopamine it could explain why I've had success with bupropion over SSRI's. Hmmmm. Isil'zha veni

I have read that Thryoid patients are quite often diagnosed with depression, and years down the road they find out that they had Thyroiditis which can have similar symptoms. I couple of years about I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Last week I was told by a specialist that I am in the middle stage of the disease. By ultrasound he found by surprise that my thyroid was 3 xs bigger than normal, and that 1/2 the cells in the Thryoid were dead. I later found out that people with this disease have a lack of dopamine in the brain, which causes depression like symptoms, and memory loss, sleep problems etc. I also have Hypothyroidism and cannot metabolise food very well. It is progressive, and in 10-15 years from now, there is a good chance I will loose all normal function, except for the thryoid suppliments which keep your other bodily functions going. However, now I understand much better why I had suffered with so many infections which doctors could not explain, and other problems associated with this disease. When you have physical problems causing depression, weight gain, memory loss etc., all these things are difficult to deal with, but I wonder how many people out there are un-aware of having this disease, and are being treated for depression etc. for years, without knowing the real source of the problems....Has anyone out there experienced the same things?
