I am so glad your boss was understanding!  That should be of great comfort to you.  I look forward to reading more from you as you get to focus more on your recovery!  Others have lots of great ideas for projects and I hope you get to work more on your recovery as well as those fun things (part of your recovery).

You are lucky to have an understanding boss and congratulations on asking your boss for the help, that's not an easy thing to do.
 
Rose's reply was great, she has really good insights.  I won't try to add to it except to say that you are not alone.  I know you feel very alone and like your circumstance is unique.  Parts are, but the overall dynamic of depression is there and that means that no matter what the issue someone here will get it.  My best wishes to you, keep us informed of your progress.

what a great boss you have! if you are a reader, it might be good for you to understand what MDD is. i just noticed yesterday there is a glossary up top that brings up a lot of issues that come up with depression. it is hurtful 
that people don't understand that it is a brain/nurture thing and beyond our control. 
when the 1st psychologist told me to "feel my feelings" i had no idea what she was talking about. but, i guess it means not to repress them - hard to do in a family that doesn't tolerate "complex" feelings. then, you are supposed to forgive yourself - again, hard to do. then you forgive others. if you are new to this diagnosis, honestly, i think the more you know the better. then be prepared for the pain of what you might discover about yourself - you  might even hate yourself for awhile - all the mistakes you made going round and round in your head. but then forgive, detach, we are all the same! not perfect, 
not even close and who says we have to be? coping mechanisms: exercise, hot baths, medications, counting to 10, walking away, support group like this. HAVE A GREAT, PRODUCTIVE WEEK!

Hi Rosie,   Lonelyness can definitly be a symptom. You don't need to feel lonely because we are here with you. Depending what your interests are, this may be a good time to do joyous activities. These activities may help lift your spirits, let you remeniss and let your guard down a little.  Start a puzzle, a scrapbook, a house project, a book club, walking group and continue to work through the program.   Members,  do you have any suggestions for Rosie?     Sylvie, Bilingual Health Educator

Well, I spoke to my boss today and he was very understanding. He told me to take some annual leave for a week and see my psychologist and if she thinks I need more time it is also OK. He was great because he understands where I am coming from- he went through a nasty divorce a while back and encouraged me to focus on getting myself better. He assured me my job is secure. I am so relieved. I am just going to focus on my homewok from this program and do some introspection. Any suggestions for how I can optimise my free time? I know I can't force getting better but I need to at least find some support structures or coping mechanisms until I get through all my stuff so I can go back to work.
Even though I know there are so may people supporting me I still feel really alone. Is feeling alone a symptom too?

Rosie,   Try talking to your work. They won't think you are the 'crazy person', they are obliged to keep your information confidential.   People often still associate mental illness with the old stigma that everyone that is depressed is crazy and irrational. This is really unfortunate as we all know it is so far from the truth. Keep on working through the program and learning about your depression and ways to change your thought and behaviour patterns. Post often as most of the members have had similar experiences and they are a great source of support.

Unfortunatelly depression scares people.... and is missunderstud, nearly a tabu. Is not a health problem but something invisible... It is hard for other to understand and accept the idea that depression exist and is not a way of being but deasese that can and should receive medical attention.
There is always a way to get out and to feel better. It is not easy but is not impossible also.

Today was another horrible day. I was having supper with two friends from work this evening and one of them mentioned that this guy I know at work was depressed. He then made fun of him because he checked himself into hospital over it.
I had a long talk with my husband last night to try and come up with a plan to try cope at work but he is finding it hard to focus on my issues as he suffers from panic disorder. He has been very supportive though. I just feel like no one close to me understands what I am going through and how utterly helpless I feel. I am trapped in a place with no exit.......

You can simply tell your boss that you have solve some personal issues. And take some time off. He obviously appreciates your work if he is willing not only to talk with you but also to get you some time off. If he wasn't he simply would tell you to find another job.

Thanks for replies. I am in South Africa. My doctor has diagnosed me with Major depression but I don't really want people at work to think I am 'that crazy person'. I have been working through the program (starting session 3 this week) and it has helped me by showing me some light at the end of the tunnel. That maybe in 16 weeks I will be over this..... I will go and see someone in our HR department and see what I can do.
