My Uncle died recently, he suffered with alzheimers for around 9 years. He was placed in care. I remember how painful it was for me to see him, he didnt remember who i was - he would say i know your face but i dont know who you are. My uncle was like my grandfather and we were very close, so BGH i fully understand how you feel - i understand the frustration, the heartache and just wanting to have them back how you remember them. I can understand how you have the desire to just pick up that sickarette - it helped you so many times before or so you would like to believe but you know its not true. It never made any of it better, it numbed your pain and made you think that things were not as bad as they really were. Just know that no matter what, by you smoking it will not change the fact that you very good friend is unwell. Leave this one to the universe this is a situation you have absolutely no control over, what you do have control over is the choice to NOT smoke, the way you deal with your fears and thoughts of seeing your friend the way she is. I really feel for you friend. Hold tight, there IS light at the end of the tunnel and i will do all that i can to get you there just hang in there. You are worth it. PrincessC :) xx

There is nothing wrong with the way you are feeling. I remember feeling the same but i wonder if you feel it even more because of your quit - your senses are heightened so everything you feel is magnified a hundred fold. The "addict" in you is aware of this and is on high alert just waiting to pounce. Delay it BGH, get through the next hour, then work on the next. Dont let the addict fill your head with lies. Just hang in there BGH. I denied for years that my uncle was sick, i used to pretend he knew exactly who i was then one day it hit me that he really didnt know. I was heartbroken, i mean earth shatteringly heartbroken. Its going to be hard BGH but smoking will not make this situation go away. PrincessC :) xx

"Only" 2 weeks? That's great! I know you're struggling with your friend's illness. In our area, we have mini-seminars about the different stages and and how to deal with someone with Alzheimers. Maybe there's something in your area too... or even an online site, that can help you with what to expect. Just like when we quit smoking, it helps to know what may be coming so we're not caught so off guard. Hugs to you, bg...and keep hanging in there. bg, I can see the faith in yourself beginning to fade so please let us see if we can help you find a way. I had some things happen very early in my quit too that were extremely upsetting and stressful and I know many others have too. Have faith that quitting during a time like this is very doable. What you're experiencing is grief for the friend that knew. Your friend will have some good days and some bad ones and unfortunately, this may go on for quite some time...maybe even years. It IS heartbreaking. I know it is. So, other than the serenity prayer...which is great...what is it that you can do that will help build your strength and confidence? You need to have a very strong and defined plan in place. What can you do to distract yourself when the thoughts become too much? Rent a movie? Read a book? Go shopping? Take a drive? Are you rewarding yourself? Doing things that make you happy and feel good? Can you go for a walk? These things help both physically and mentally. Most of all, you need to commit. Know in your heart that no matter what happens, you can get through it without smoking. Know that there will be times that you get tired and life will continually throw things at you...and life moves on. Nothing changes for the better if you smoke. Someone posted this on the site once... It's an altered version of the serenity prayer... "God, grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change, the courage to change the one I can, and the wisdom to know it's me." What do you feel you need to make your quit a success? Lots of people want to help you, bg :) Hang in there.
