Final Quit: I can really relate to your post. I smoked on and off (mostly on)for 35 years, up to 2 1/2 packs a day. I quit so many times I lost count. This quit really is different for me, though. Because for the first time, I truly understand that I AM A DRUG ADDICT -- I'm hopelessly addicted to nicotine. So I have only two choices, as I see it. I either give in and let the nicotine demons have me or I fight back. This time, I chose to fight. When I have a craving, I hang on to my anger that I have allowed this addiction to take such a tremendous hold on me. Ask my son or husband if I let anything else control me -- no. So why would I hand over total control to my addiction? I hope this makes sense, but the way to make my quit work is to finally realize that there is absolutely nothing positive about being a smoker. The addiction only made me believe I was enjoying myself as a smoker. It was all a lie -- an ugly, disgusting 35-year lie. I know and you know better -- none of us really enjoyed smoking. We always envied non-smokers because they didn't put themselves through all this angst and misery. So, for me what is working is to never allow myself to feel that I've given up something positive. With a craving, it's just too easy to slip into that trap of "oh, I'm depriving myself of cigarettes". Lose the deprivation thinking and it makes a huge, huge difference. In a quit, you can't feel sorry yourself. Celebrate the great decision you've made over and over and over. And keep rewarding yourself. Keep the faith! Final Quit, Good for you for not giving up!! Make sure you sit down and think long and hard about why you went back to smoking..what was that major trigger. Mine for example, is cocktails and big parties. Once you have figured out what your major trigger's are...look at them as obstacles, and figure out the best way to beat them. Forwarned is forarmed!!! Glad to have you here!!! Try, try agian. There is not block out after any prescribed number of quits. The way I see it, all the times you didn't smoke during your quit attempts were still times you didn't smoke. Power up for you next and final quit. Keep thinking each quit is final. One day you will look back and see that the last one was final. You are not alone in reQuit time. I can remember buying a pack, smoking just one, and throwing the pack away. Like that was gonna help me quit? And at today's prices! So the problem is not the persistence, it's the follow through. So, how do you increase your follow through. I only know of one way. DON'T LIGHT ANOTHER SMOKE!!! Ok, now that I have your attention, you have to want to quit more than you want to smoke. Period. If you still want to smoke more than you want to quit, then you will. You are prolonging the torture, but if you want to quit more than you want to smoke it will happen. When you feel like a chihuahua and all jitterey and can't think and want to choke someone, and you hate yourself for the things you said and how you said them all day, you STILL DO NOT go to the store, park your car, open the door, shut the door, lock the door, go through the store door, pull out your wallet, walk to the counter, say the brand you want, pay the cashier, walk back outside, open the pack, take one out, pull out the lighter or matches, and light it. Do you see how many opportunities there are to CHOOSE NOT TO SMOKE? And actually, there are so many more steps to this that I could not possibly list them all. So choose. Smoking or not. It's my choice, what's your choice? Maybe this is harsh, but if you have been "trying" for 10 years, it's time to do something different. The true definition of insanity is continuing to do what you've always done and expecting different results. So. Whatcha say? I'll be here and so will bunches of others. Final we will be here for you Jan 1st. I wish I had the answer for you but if there's one thing I've learned it's that we are all individuals. I know that it is important to make sure that we change our lifestyle so that our days feel rewarding, relaxing etc. (We need to realize that we aren't losing anything) This is sometimes easier said than done and I know I work at it every day. I also know that smoking does mask depression for alot of people. Zyban works for some people...but it certainly isn't the only antidepressant available. I also know that counselling is a tremendously valuable resource. But..........do I know what will help you.......nope...but I will be here to support you the best I can! Finalquit, you say you want to enjoy yourself over the holidays, but if you want to quit, then you really don't enjoy smoking anymore do you? If you really do then maybe like Healer says, your desire to quit isn't stronger than your desire to quit. I'm not saying you're not ready you know yourself best...just some food for thought My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/12/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 130 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,659 Amount Saved: $509.6 Life Gained: Days: 10 Hrs: 1 Mins: 53 Seconds: 17

Oh, how I can relate. I have so many starts and quits that I have lost count. I have tried the zyban, the patches, the gum, smoke away, herbs and cold turkey. This time I read Allen Carrs book Easy way to Stop Smoking (not sure if I can do this, if not I am sorry and I won't do it again.) The book has helped me a lot. If you can get and read it before you quit. I am doing this cold turkey and after reading the book this is by far the easiest it has been for me. Not sure if other would agree, but it works for me. My thought were the same as your "I am a habitual quitter! " I alway told my friends I can stop, it keeping stopped that I have trouble with. I am working on day 10 of my final quit. I also will add you to my buddy list if you ever want to chat. Good to see you back. Hey Final Quit, Major bummer you started again... expecially after all those days of fighting you have done. 94 days was a long time to be smokefree! I've heard people make that comment as well about trying to quit a few times before you are sucessful. It's to each there own. Judging from all the people that are keeping the quit here, it seems we need to tell ourself day in and day out that we will not have one... NOT ONE PUFF EVEN. Then no matter how many times we've tried to quit before isn't important... staying quit is what is important. Enjoy your holidays... but just think of the present you could have given to yourself this holiday. N.O.P.E.
